The Commission from Jesus — Matthew 28:18-20 (18) And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. (19) Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: (20) Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
Mark 16:15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.
Scriptural Missions Example in Scripture — Acts 13:1-3 (1) Now there were in the church that was at Antioch certain prophets and teachers; as Barnabas, and Simeon that was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen, which had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. (2) As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them. (3) And when they had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them, they sent them away.
Churches co-operating together in mission work without the hierarchy of mission boards is the scriptural example — Philippians 4:14-16 (14) Notwithstanding ye have well done, that ye did communicate with my affliction. (15) Now ye Philippians know also, that in the beginning of the gospel, when I departed from Macedonia, no church communicated with me as concerning giving and receiving, but ye only. (16) For even in Thessalonica ye sent once and again unto my necessity.
I am not saying that all Missions Boards are bad — but to be true to scripture is to follow the scriptural example of mission work found in the NT — the NT example is missions through the local church — with the church having authority over the missionary.
Any member of a local church is under the authority of that church to do God’s work — in the NT, there is no other example of missionaries, members, or pastors being under the authority of any organization other that the NT church of which they are a member.
The Process — Missionaries surrender — then are sent out under the authority of their local church for the purpose of winning souls and establishing churches — their church is their sponsor — without need for a mission board or mission association — they are responsible to their home church — other churches can co-operate with them in their efforts — to raise funds they go out on what is called deputation — introducing themselves, their calling and burden, seeking other churches regular support for their works — this allows churches to co-operate in world-wide mission endeavors.
This is the only example of how to do mission work given in Scripture.
